I chose to share this song because it is such a motivating song that makes me want to dance. I would consider it to be my self-care song; I listen to it when I feel good and when I’m not feeling so good. The beat is strong and it makes me want to dance, Prince’s energy radiates through my apartment on full-blast. This song means confidence for me.
Some lyrics that stand out to me are “might not know it now, but baby I’m a star”. He acknowledges that everyone may not see how amazing he is, but he still knows he’s a star. The opinions of others don’t dictate how he feels about himself, rather he sets the standard of how he views himself and waits for everyone to catch up with him. This is very inspiring and important, especially considering the fact that society often creates mechanisms to make people feel like they aren’t enough or that they should care about what other people think.
The entire soundtrack from the Motion Picture Purple Rain is amazing, other songs I love from the album are Let’s Go Crazy, When Dove Cry, I Would Die 4 U, and of course Purple Rain.
